2025–2026 Junior Festival Audition Requirements
Percussionists must choose snare drum or mallets for the audition.
Audition Piece:
Jr. Etude No. 1: The Snake
This is a full band etude, which can be rehearsed in an ensemble format.
In addition to either snare drum or mallets, all percussionists must play both the Percussion 1 and Percussion 2 parts, which include short excerpts on bass drum, crash cymbals, suspended cymbal, tambourine, triangle, and timpani.
Scales:
Mallet percussionists should prepare all scales on the scale sheet. In the audition, students will be asked to play two of the major scales and the chromatic scale. Scales are not required for snare drum auditions.
Sight-Reading:
Percussionists will sight-read on their primary instrument only (snare drum or mallets).
Students will be given one minute to look over the excerpt before playing.
Equipment:
Percussionists must bring their own sticks, mallets, and beaters. All other equipment will be provided.
Students may bring their own triangle and tambourine or use the instruments provided.
The timpani setup in the audition room will be International Style: lowest drum on the left, highest drum on the right.
