2019-2020 Junior District Vocal Audition Information

Girls:  "Come Follow" is sung as a round with the recording. The singer enters at measure 5 and sings the round 1 time through. Slight variations of the tune are acceptable. Sopranos and altos will be divided as needed between S1/A1 and S2/A2 after acceptance to the festival.

Boys:  "All Things Must Perish" is sung as a round with the recording. Choose the key that best suits your singer and MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENT KNOWS WHAT KEY TO REQUEST IN THE AUDITION. Singer enters at measure 5 and sings the round 1 time through. Slight variations of the tune are acceptable.

Sight Reading: The sight reading excerpt will meet these criteria:

  • It will be in a comfortable range for each voice part.

  • It will be in a major key, in 4/4 time.

  • It will begin and end on the tonic.

  • It will consist almost entirely of scalar motion; any leaps will be to the tonic.

  • Rhythms may include whole, half, quarter and eighth notes.

Here are examples of comparable difficulty.

All methods of sight singing are acceptable (solfege, numbers, neutral syllables, etc.).

Scales: Singers will be asked to sing one *eight note* major scale (repeating the top 'do') in the following keys:

  • Sopranos: F

  • Alto: Bb

  • High voice male: C

  • Middle voice male: E

  • Low voice male: C

Adjudicators will give a triad and the starting pitch, and the student will begin the scale whenever ready.
